Teacher Comment

Emma.
Your creative side showed through during our mosaic projects.  I liked the fact that you took your time until you were happy with the end product.  You experimented with lines, colours and shape, which were the main components to completing a mosaic.  You stay on task and use what Enrich has to offer to your advantage.  You are developing in confidence and you are eager to help others when needed.  You are beginning to voice your opinion more, which is great to see.  Keep this up for next term Emma.

Today's Game

Todays game was Indian Chairs.  The aim of the game is to get all the other people out by tagging them. First you split everyone into two groups. Then one group lines up and the other team kneels down in a line, one person would face one side and the next person would face the opposite side. The same thing would happen till the end of the line. One person from the group that kneels down is the tagger. The other team has to run away from the tagger. The person being chased can jump through the line, the tagger cannot.  The tagger can tap someone who is facing the way of the runner and then they're the tagger. The old tagger then kneels down in that spot.

Happy feet

Happy Feet
Emperor Penguin
Today our current events was about Happy feet.  Happy Feet is a penguin that washed up on Peka Peka beach on the Kapiti Coast a week ago.Happy Feet is an emperor penguin and is 4000 kilometers away from home, Happy Feet has had lots of surgery to get sticks, stones, fish and sand out of his stomach.
Doctors made the penguin a tiny area which is made out of party ice.Now Happy Feet is resting in Wellington Zoo. After all of Happy Feet's surgery they are going to ship him to Antarctica or let him out in Foveaux Strait. I don't think they should do any of these .  If they were going to ship him to Antarctica I think it would be to risky and if they put him in Foveaux Strait he might swallow fish, sand, rocks and sticks again.

Art Talent Development

A few weeks ago  for talent development I started to make a small mosaic for me to take home.
I am doing mine as a shell that looks like this:
First we drew a simple object on a paving tile. Then we smash the other tiles then see if they fit onto our shape that we drew onto  our tile.Next we glued all of the tiles with a special glue and 2 weeks ago I started the background and this week I finished my back ground off. Next week I'll start grouting which is a using a special type of glue to fill the gaps with.

Chess

The main idea of chess is to kill the king by using your players.
In chess there is 32 pieces all together (16 white and 16 black) which are made up of 1 king,1 queen, 2 bishops, 2 rooks, 2 knights and 8 pawns.  Your opponent's king is the player that you try to kill.  The king can move 1 square at a time.  A queen can move 1-7 squares at a time in any direction.  My favourite chess piece is the queen.  A bishop can move 1-7 spaces diagonally only.  A knight can move  in a L shape (1 sideways and 2 up or down).  Rooks can move 1-7 spaces but is only allowed to go straight.  A pawn can move 1 space foward and thats about it! There is a very cool video about a chess game.  You can search it on YouTube "Claymation Chess."

Othello

Othello is a board game that we got last week as a gift from Sarah when she left at the end of Term 1.

The aim of Othello is to get the board covered in the colour you are - either black or white.

First choose a colour.  White goes first. You place 2 counters each in the very middle of the board.  White must put one of his / her counters beside the black counter.  You have to trap the other players counter. Here is an example
            0 0 0
Once you've trapped them by having your counter at the beginning and end of the line, you can turn the counters in-between into your colour.  Keep playing until you've filled up the board or if you can't move.  When you fill up the board it's whoever has the most counters wins.

Happy playing!

Talent development

Next term we are doing passion projects. Before we do passion projects we have to do talent development.  Talent development is learning more about our talents.  First we chose what we will do out of  ICT, Science or Art. I decided to do art.   For art we are studying mosaics.  A mosaic is a picture or thing made out of smashed up tiles, plates or cones.

This artist decided to mosaic a garden bench.

The artist of this picture has
decided to make a mosaic of cat.
The science group is doing nature science and the ICT group is working on applications like Scratch and Alice.
